Free & Low-Cost Spay-Neuter Resources for Pet Cats

[1]  Zimmer Feline Foundation  505-466-1676
PET CATS--Zimmer Feline Foundation is the #1 provider of FREE spay/neuter for Taos area cats!

Zimmer Feline Foundation
505-466-1676 provides veterinary support for pet cats living in low‐income homes (under $50K/year) — by providing them with a free and local spay/neuter & vaccine(s) through participating veterinary clinics and — in the event of a treatable medical emergency — with acute care assistance.  By helping these cats keep their original homes, the number of orphaned cats and kittens that are given to shelters or abandoned outdoors to form or join feral cat colonies is reduced.  Zimmer Feline Foundation is an IRS 501(c)(3) private operating foundation, operating in New Mexico since 2010.

Because this is a "pet cat" program, Zimmer can provide assistance only where the number of cats in the home (fixed or not) is within a reasonable limit for providing lifelong care.  Qualifications are listed on the Zimmer Feline Foundation website.

In Taos, surgery is performed at the Salazar Road Veterinary Clinic (cats 5 months and older) after you have arranged for assistance with the Zimmer Foundation. You may also use your Zimmer voucher for a FREE pet cat spay/neuter at many participating vets including the
Angel Fire Small Animal Hospital, and the Santa Fe Animal Shelter's satellite spay/neuter clinic. NOTE: Santa Fe Humane clinic can safely spay/neuter kittens 8 weeks and older.  Please call 505-466-1676 or visit the Zimmer Foundation website for program details. Service area includes Taos, Colfax, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe and other counties.

[2] Española Valley Humane Society (EVHS)  Quickest and easiest way to
make spay-neuter appointment is on-line
Or call 505-753-0228 for appointments. No voucher required. Cats between 8 weeks and 8 years of age are eligible.
PROGRAM CURRENTLY SUSPENDED
The EVHS offers FREE spay-neuter for Taos area cats with funding provided by the Zimmer Feline Foundation. Check-in with cat(s) between 8am-9am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Fridays (excluding holidays). Tuesdays & Wednesdays typically offer the earlier pick up times so you can get back to Taos sooner. For cats older than 4 months, please do not feed the cat breakfast on the morning of the surgery (water is fine). If your kitten is between 2-4 months, please feed a light breakfast of wet food in the early morning before surgery.

With funding from the Zimmer Feline Foundation, the EVHS offers free spay/neuter, with free optional microchip & vaccines, for all Taos area cats: pet, community (feral), barn cat, etc. Register your pet's microchip for FREE at the Found Animals Registry.

[3] Planned Pethood Taos  575-613-4110

Since our non-profit seeks to reduce the pet overpopulation in the Taos area, if you are unable to get your cat (pet, stray, or feral) spayed/neutered for FREE via the Zimmer Feline Foundation voucher program, and have no way of getting to the Española Valley Humane for a free cat spay-neuter, then please call or text us for help.

[4] Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society (SFAS&HS)  505-474-6422  Saturday Appts Available!
Spay-neuter clinic is at 2570 Camino Entrada, Santa Fe, 87507

Taos area pet cats are eligible for FREE spay/neuter-vaccines at the SFAS&HS' satellite spay/neuter clinic via a Zimmer Feline Foundation voucher. Year round, SFAS&HS, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, also offers low cost spay/neuter and vaccination services for cats and dogs. Young kittens and puppies need to be a minimum of 2 lbs for spay/neuter. Kittens are usually 2 lbs by 2 months of age. Current pricing information is on their website, but is FREE if you have a Zimmer voucher. Appointments are required for spay or neuter services. Spay-Neuter Days are T, W, Th & Sat. Typically drop off time is between 8am-9am and pick up time is by 2pm the same day (sometimes earlier), but please confirm the times with their staff.
Register your pet's microchip for FREE at the Found Animals Registry.

[5] Stray Hearts Animal Shelter  575-758-2981

Please bring your kittens to Stray Hearts to help stop pet overpopulation in Taos!
The kittens will be vaccinated, spay/neutered, and put up for adoption.

Please get the mom cat fixed for free: Free cat & kitten spay-neuter/vaccines through Zimmer Feline Foundation (at Salazar Vet in town, ages 4-6 months & older) and Española Valley Humane (ages 8 weeks & older).

If you choose re-home some/all of your cat's kittens: please do not give out the kittens without getting them fixed (most new cat owners don't follow through with spay-neuter before a 4-6 month old kitten makes more kittens).

Stray Hearts receives over $250,000 of taxpayer money each year to help fund the shelter, with the remaining funding coming from donations. However, at this time Stray Hearts does not offer spay-neuter for public pet cats and dogs, but is offering free spay-neuter with vaccine for community (aka feral cats). Animal shelters are needed because of unwanted pet cats and dogs. Solve this problem by fixing your cat or dog before having a litter.  Stray Hearts Animal Shelter's 2018 990 Tax Form
